Kelly's Phonics Songs: Ultimate YouTube Playlist!

For early readers, songs and chants are a powerful way to get to know the letters and sounds and retain that information. It’s a lot to learn! Twenty six lower case letters and twenty six upper case letters, plus all the sounds, and combination of letters to make new sounds! Whew! Songs and chants are the hack your child needs to retain all of this information and become a great reader!

I’m going to link my favourite phonics songs on YouTube but I don’t recommend sitting for a long time watching these videos. Play them a few times. Play them as background music. Learn the songs then sing them with your child on your own without the videos. Sing them when you get ready for school, in the car, at the grocery store, on a walk- sing them all the time and watch how fast your child learns from these songs!

Kelly’s Favourite Phonics Songs!

For Early Readers

  • The Phonics Song goes through the whole alphabet and each letter sound. It’s got a relaxing tune and it’s easy to remember and sing along. My kindergartens learned to read on this song and singing it all day long!

  • Hip Hop Vowels Short Vowel Song is a great introduction to the short vowel sounds. I always start with short vowel sounds because knowing these sounds will open up the biggest opportunity to read more words for early readers. It took me a while to find a song on YouTube about short vowels that was quality enough to present to you. Many videos pronounce the sounds incorrectly, include too much information for early readers, or are just too long! Keep in mind that you have to preview videos until you find the perfect song to use with your child.

  • Alphabet Song is great for kids who like to dance! You’ve never heard an alphabet song with a beat like this before!

  • Pop! Hop! Bop! Is a fabulous song about the word family /op/. Word families are great for giving early readers the strategies they need to read lots for words. You’ll see in this video, if your child knows /op/, they can read “hop”, “bop”, “pop” and so many other words ending in /op/.

For More Advanced Readers

  • Don’t Read Like A Robot gives kids who have trouble reading fluently some motivation to “read with expression”.

  • Consonant Swag is a cool song about consonant blends! It’s fun and could lead to some fun consonant blend games. How many words can say that start with a consonant blend?
