Mixing Up Lowercase b and d?

Lots of kids mix up lowercase b and d when they are in Kindergarten and Grade 1. Even though mixing up lowercase b and d is quite common, it can be very frustrating for kids and parents, who just want to help, but don't know where to start! I am going to share three strategies that I use at The Reader's Club to help get b and d sorted out. These strategies have been very effective for my students, and they have worked surprisingly fast!

1) Use a visual cue to help remember b and d.

Visual learners get this really quickly! Lowercase b has a belly on the front and lowercase d has a circle on the back for a doggy tail! You can also use lowercase b wears a diaper, but be prepared for lots of silly diaper jokes!

2) Play a sorting game to help kids see the difference between b and d.

You can download this free printable sorting game to play. Play often and before you know it, your child will be an expert at sorting out lowercase b and d!

3) Practice writing lowercase b so that your child remembers that b has a back.

For hands-on learners, this strategy may work best. You can see how it's done in this video.
